“And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.”
II Timothy 2:2
The scope and sequence of this article is not concerning the worldly colleges that have caved in to secular pressure. Many “Christian” Colleges have turned over their leadership to a new generation of pragmatists, and still others have redefined the word compromise to mean relevant. In order to increase enrollment and maintain salaries, colleges have learned that joining is easier than fighting.
Going with the flow maintains the appearance of success. Cardinal truths, old fashioned separation, espousing the KJV/TR, Biblical Evangelism, and holding to ecclesiastical separation have been replaced with an ecumenical spirit, an eclectic Greek text, seeker-sensitive rock concerts, and an ego-centric morality.
Such institutions are arguably doing more harm than good. But I said that this article was not about worldly schools - forgive my indulgence. What is wrong with good schools (such as ABC) that have scriptural inceptions and godly motivations??
Paul tells Timothy to commit to faithful men. Colleges like Antioch Baptist College have committed themselves to hundreds of men; the problem has been that a good portion of them have proved unfaithful.
Many small Bible schools are so desperate for students that they lower their enrollment standards and hope that they can pay their tuition. Pastors and teachers pour their lives into these loafers only to see them quit or transfer to a worldly alternative. Then there are those who benefit from the care and dedication of a godly college without adopting the truth that was faithfully preached. These amateur infidels then take their diplomas, join user friendly ministries, and then make money off they’re condescending monologues about the wacko legalists that they used to associate with.
Through the years I believe that I have been guilty of violating II Tim. 2:22. The laborers are so few that we have been too optimistic about some young men. West Point is not known for having large enrollments and neither is the Naval Academy, why? - Because they want faithful men. They do not want to pour their lives into men that are NOT a good investment. Faithful men in the biblical context is not about academic aptitude or physical stamina, although these things are a blessing; the faithfulness referred to in II Timothy is in reference the Lord and His word. Faithful men are serious about the Lord’s work and about their calling. Faithful men understand that they are called to holy warfare and that eternal souls are at stake. Faithful men fear God and are blood earnest when they preach to others.
Faithful men turn a deaf ear to a laughing world and are not intimidated when shallow brethren belittle them.
Antioch Baptist College, by the grace of God, will become a West Point for godly and faithful men. We are looking for faithful men and women that we can commit ourselves to.
God wants us to invest our energies into people that will in turn teach others also.
In low tones I hear a criticism: “you will stay small then.” – Perhaps, but this is the Lord’s business. I believe that we have come to the kingdom for “such a time as this” and maybe there will be a resurgence of young people looking for a great cause and strong College. Army and Navy Special Forces are not looking to build enrollment, they are looking to build men, and so are we!!
Paul committed himself to training Timothy. “This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare; Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:” I Timothy 1:18, 19.
I think Timothy was a pretty good investment, what about you!!??
