I. RESOLVING THE TRUTH - What is truth? (John 18:37-38)

A. An exact and faithful expression of the facts

B. The standard by which to judge all else; a final authority

C. The real answers to the real questions; those things that remain (Heb.12:26-28)

II. RECEIVING THE TRUTH

A. Man Is The Protector And Propagator Of Truth

1. Serve in truth (I Sam.12:24)

2. Buy the truth (Prov.23:23)

3. Seek the truth (Jer.5:1)

4. Know the truth (Jn.8:31-32): knowledge of the truth must therefore be possible

5. Preach the truth (2 Tim. 4:2)

B. God is the Parent of Truth

1. God the Father is truth (Ps.31:5)

2. God the Son is truth (Jn.14:6)

3. God the Holy Ghost is truth (Jn.14:17)

C. God Is The Preserver of Truth

1. The truth will endure to all generations (Ps.100:5)

2. The truth can be known with certainty (Prov.22:21)

3. The truth is contained in the word of God (Jn.17:17; I Thes.2:13; II Tim.2:15)

III. RESISTING THE TRUTH

A. Truth Is Disregarded By Man

1. Truth is fallen in the street (Isa.59:14-15)

2. Men are not valiant for the truth (Jer.9:3,5)

3. There is no truth in the land (Hos.4:1,6)

4. Men turn their ears away from the truth (II Tim.4:4)

B. Truth Is Denied By Other Authorities (Rom.1:25; II Cor.2:17; 4:2)

1. The word of God: the only God-given authority (Jn.8:31-32; 17:17)

2. Tradition: the authority of man's long-time practice (Matt.15:1-9, esp.v.3,6,9; Col.2:8)

3. Philosophy: the authority of man's greatest wisdom (Col.2:8; Acts 17:18, with v.16,22,23)

4. Science: the authority of observable facts and repeatable physical laws (I Tim.6:20)

5. Scholarship: the authority of academic learning and agreed upon knowledge (II Tim.3:7; Isa.29:9-12)

6. Pragmatism: the authority of what brings the desired results

7. Experience: the authority of personal experience (Rom.10:2-3)

C. Truth Is Defined By Only One Final Authority

1. A man chooses between two opposing authorities, and the one which he finally chooses becomes his final authority.

a. Theistic evolution (Bible vs. Science)

b. Concerts and Drama (Bible vs. Pragmatism)

c. Books and other material about the Bible (Bible vs. Interpretation)

2. Only an absolute authority can give absolute truth; all other truth is relative and changeable (Ps.119:128)

3. This final authority is the Bible.
