The Bible - God's Message To Man
By Pastor Ronnie Wolfe -
Bibliology Lesson #2
Psalms 93:5 Thy testimonies are very sure ...
- WHAT IS THE BIBLE?
- Quotes From Others:
- Dr. Harold Lindsell says, A
... the only true and dependable source for Christianity lies in the book
we call the Bible.@ [The Battle
For The Bible]
- Natural & Special Revelation
- Natural Revelation
- Natural revelation is that revelation of God which manifests himself
in the natural realm.
- This revelation shows God in his creation, but it is not sufficient
revelation for a person to trust Jesus Christ.
- General or natural revelation was more obvious before man sinned
than it is today.
- Since man has sinned, he cannot read the divine script in nature as
Adam did before he sinned.
- Special Revelation
- When Jesus saves, he uses the medium of the Bible - Eph. 1:13; 1 Cor.
1:21; Rom. 10:17
- The Bible is God= s
special revelation B 2 Timothy
3:16-17
- This is God's special revelation of himself to man.
- Jesus Christ is the Living Word of God (Heb. 1:1-3), and the Bible
is the Written Word of God (Rom. 10:17)
- Special Revelation disclosed three ways:
- Theophanies - Appearances of God Himself
- Dwelling between the cherubim (Psalm 80:1; 99:1)
- Appeared in fire of clouds and smoke (Gen. 15:17; Exod. 3:2;
19:9; Psalm 78:14; 99:7)
- Appeared in stormy winds (Job 38:1; 40:6; Psalm 18:10-16)
- As angel of the Lord (Exod. 23:20-23; Isa. 63:8, 9)
- Incarnation of Jesus Christ (Col. 1:19; 2:9)
- Direct Communications
- Audible voice (Gen. 2:16; 3:8-19; 4:6-15)
- Urim and Thummim (Num. 27:21; Deut. 33:8)
- Dreams (Num. 12:6; Deut. 13:1-6)
- Visions (Isa. 6; 21:6f; Ezek 1-3; 8:00; Dan 1:17; 2:19; 7-10)
- Holy Spirit (Mark 13:11; Luke 12:12; John 14:17)
- Miracles
a. Healings
b. Resurrections
c. Jesus= Incarnation,
Death and Resurrection
- Characteristics of the Bible
The Bible is trustworthy
The Bible is truthful
The Bible is plenary
The Bible is inspired
The Bible is inerrant or infallible
WHAT ABOUT CREEDS AND CONFESSIONS
Original Statements In Creeds & Confessions
- Most, if not all, creeds and confessions of denominational churches
have stated that they believe in the inerrancy of the scriptures
- Later, many who hold to these creeds and confessions changed their
views on inerrancy and began to teach that some things in the Bible are
true, but other things are false. This began to be known as
neo-orthodoxy.
- They began to teach that nothing is supernatural, thus they deny any
supernatural events in scripture and try to explain them logically or
scientifically.
- They say that the Bible is true only when it speaks of salvation and
certain basic doctrines of Christianity but that not all other facts are
without error.
- This makes it hard for them to continue in their modern thought,
because the creeds that they say they agree to have not been changed; and
this is a constant reminder that their churches used to teach the
inerrancy of scripture.
Conclusion
Some Quotes
- As the flame on Elijah= s
altar was caused, not by the dead sticks, but by the fire from heaven, so
only the inspiration of the Almighty can explain the unique revelation of
the Old and New Testaments.1
- All the great religions of the world are book-religions ... The Koran
is a gortesque human parody of the Bible; its exaggerated pretensions of
divinity, indeed, are the best proof that it is of purely human origin ...
Christianity is not a book-religion, but a life-religion. The Bible does
not give us Christ, but Christ gives us the Bible.2
